The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.
He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
