The star has handed over the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to preserve the Britain's grassroots concert spaces.

Fender was presented with the prize on 16 October as his latest record the album was chosen as the top album of the past year.

The musician has decided to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the vital role small stages played in his beginning days.

"I couldn't be pursuing this success if it wasn't for all the shows I did around the area, and further afield, when I was just getting going," remarked Sam Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these locations have shut down – approximately 16% of the total UK scene.

In the last year, top acts such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to support the industry, by applying a small levy to their ticket prices, which goes to help local stages.

Sam Fender also joined in, raising more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to help numerous small stages across the UK.

These funds assisted spaces that were facing possible closure due to difficulties caused by flooding, blazes and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Other venues received funding support in improving facilities and sound and lighting systems that helped musicians and concertgoers.

"The notion that funds from concerts in big venues helps the local stages, where it begins for musicians like me, is just logical," Fender has stated.

He is among several artists to donate his honor winnings to good deeds.

Back when the band won the award in 1996 for their release their work, frontman Cocker announced that the act would donate their prize money to the charity War Child.

That year, artist Ms Dynamite split her award between multiple good causes, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I donated a grand to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed updated gear," she shared with outlets.

Previously, Ezra Collective donated their prize money to the community center that supported their band, in addition to other independent music bodies.

And 1994 winners the group contributed their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was found to have the condition.

"The victory was quite enough," remarked vocalist Heather Small. "The prize was the bonus but we could do without the bonus, because we had the honor. So our victory affected somebody else's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved two local spots in that region, by bringing them into community ownership.

The first in the city and The Croft in that location were bought under the public acquisition scheme, which is supported by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who purchase "ownership units" in the buildings.
