In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
