Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
